Title: Managing Editor – Web and Media Date: May 15, 2024

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for management of the NWTF website and the web editorial team to work across departments within the NWTF to develop content that highlights the organization’s mission accomplishments and the overall outdoor lifestyle in a compelling manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct, review and evaluate editorial staff, including managing or associate editors and the publishing assistant, in duties related to NWTF media platforms
Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff
Oversees the daily workflow of the department
Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations
Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary purpose is to generate and edit content for all NWTF media platforms including:
Magazines
Television/Radio
Press releases
Promotional materials (brochures, fliers, etc.)
Website
Social media
E-newsletter
E-blasts
Coordinate the day-to-day activities of the web editorial team to:
Assign story leads
Ensure deadlines are met
Coordinating NWTF’s web content calendar and facilitating population of content and editing of nwtf.org
Coordinate a regular meeting schedule with Social Media Manager to address influencer program participants about NWTF updates.
Act as liaison to conservation department to better assist with telling the NWTF story
Update content regularly and suggest areas of improvement on website
Edit content for consistency and accuracy by recognizing discrepancies in language, layout or formatting
Follow the standards, procedures and methodologies for content creation, organization and distribution
Must be able to take projects from concept to completion with minimal guidance
Work with staff from all parts of NWTF business, including volunteers and partners, to interview, research and create compelling ways to tell the NWTF story
Send communications through eblasts, including press releases, newsletters, articles and more
Understand the NWTF’s mission and promote the NWTF to media, members and the public, as well as other employees
Attend annual NWTF Convention, writer conferences, regional meetings and training opportunities, as necessary
Monitor analytics from the website to guide content creation and website editorial calendar
Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

Must have strong writing and editing abilities and desire to consistently create a wide array of written materials on deadline(s)
Basic knowledge of WordPress or other website content management systems
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills a must
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel
Firm knowledge of AP style or the ability to learn
Ability to handle basic graphic needs of sizing photography for website use
Attention to detail, fact checking and ability to multi-task and consistently meet deadlines
Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Ability to understand issues pertaining to hunting, hunters’ rights, conservation and the outdoors, and relate these concepts to the public
Detail-oriented, creative, deadline-driven team player who can adapt and learn quickly, particularly in regard to new software and technology
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must be able to legally handle firearms

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
3+ years of experience writing for website and or outdoor publications
Hold hunter safety certification

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
